Route sifting
High Speed Rail (Crewe – Manchester) Environmental Statement, Glossary, abbreviations and references, published by the Department for Transport in 2022, defines route sifting as: ‘A sequential appraisal of route options undertaken during the design of a proposed development. At each stage of appraisal, or sift, sustainability/environmental performance is considered alongside cost and constructability, operational and engineering information, and the preferred option for progression to the next level of design are selected.’
